Freezing rice

Read our tips on how to freeze rice so you get the best from your food (and don't succumb to food poisoning).

Freezing rice

  • Storing cooked rice can be a bit tricky, as bacteria present in the rice multiplies really fast at room temperature, so it must be cooled and stored as quickly as possible. Therefore, make sure you spread the rice out on a large tray once it is cooked, so it cools rapidly, then transfer to freezerproof containers and freeze immediately.
  • Keep rice salads in the fridge until ready to serve. Don’t allow them to sit out for longer than 30 minutes.
  • When you reheat the frozen rice, defrost in the fridge for around 1 hour and just make sure that you heat it thoroughly, so it’s piping hot all the way through.
