Did you know that if all the bees in the world died today there would be very little life left on earth within 5 years because plants wouldn't get pollinated. Don't know if it's true but it's a good reason to help them out just in case. And I love honey too, everybody wins.

I couldn't possibly use this prize, no place to put it/flowers... :( But, my mother's taking a course and has been telling me how important bees are to the environment, so it's very very encouraging to see so much interest in this competition! :) Did anyone else see the quote in the apiarist garden at Chelsea Flower Show? I can't remember who by, but it said that if there were no bees, mankind would become extinct in 4 years... Amazing stuff... Glad to see so many budding bee-aficionados on an unrelated site! :) Cordelia Louise x x

May 5

We need more beekeepers in the UK. the drop in colony numbers and Apiarists in recent years is having an effect on the number od polinators available.

psafloyd

May 5

I would recommend anyone thinking about taking up beekeeping gets in touch with their local division of the British Beekeepers Association and gets some training. After all, these are living creatures and need some care. They also have the ability to hurt you, so great care is required. I'd recommend the book Bees at the Bottom of the Garden as an opener.

May 4

I agree great prize and think the local farmers would be happy if I was a lucky winner. I have done a lot of research to check its something I could do and considered the busier times for the Bees like the summer etc when they may need more watching and checking for swarming etc, with so many problems for our Bee's from pesticides to disease I hope I am lucky enough to give it a go and give them a chance in an organic area... so fingers crossed, but if not me good luck to who ever does win....
