A recent survey by
California Pistachios has revealed that while 82% of
people know nuts are good for them, only 10% think pistachios are the
healthiest option and only 9%
of people know that pistachios contain lutein, which is essential to eye and heart health.
Pistachios have the most lutein of any nut. Lutein is an antioxidant that is not naturally produced by the body, but consuming a handful a day can reduce the risk of age-related macular disease (AMD).
AMD is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the western world, and although it's most common in later life, an increasing number of younger people are developing this debilitating condition.
There is also evidence that lutein helps protect against cataracts, and may also help prevent clogging of the carotid arteries in the neck, an indication of atherosclerosis, which leads to heart attacks.
Pistachios are one of the lowest-calorie nuts: one pistachio contains 3-4 calories, and one portion contains 20% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin B6.
Almost 90% of the fat in these moreish nuts is unsaturated and they're the best source of phytosterols, a component that helps maintain normal cholesterol levels.
