Surely there must have been a reason for the French to call the tomato the love apple? Well, scientists might now know why. Researchers at the University of Portsmouth found that male volunteers who’d slurped a can of tomato soup every day for two weeks had up to 12 per cent more lycopene in their sperm. Lycopene, the pigment which makes tomatoes and other fruits red, is a powerful antioxidant that’s also associated with boosting male fertility.
