Tea does not get much healthier than rooibos – a refreshing, healthy, caffeine-free cuppa.
Tea total
Also known as redbush, this tea is grown on the arid, sandy terrain of the Table Mountain region on the Western Cape in South Africa; it's a unique microclimate in which rooibos bushes thrive – it doesn’t grow anywhere else on earth. The spiky bushes, which look like giant shaving brushes, are hand harvested and dried in the sun. And the resulting tea is a health phenomenon.

It has no caffeine, contains just a quarter of the tannin of black tea, and is packed with antioxidants called flavanoids, which mop up the free radicals responsible for attacking healthy cells and causing cancer, strokes and heart disease. A terrific source of calcium, fluoride and magnesium, rooibos tea is thought to aid liver function, increase iron absorption, and ease hay fever, asthma and skin complaints (local mums fill their babies’ bottles with it to treat nappy rash).

The tea has a distinctive, slightly aromatic, smokey flavour, and is delicious taken either with milk or a slice of lemon. The brew can even be used in bread dough, soups, stews, casseroles, sorbets and fruit smoothies. Brands sold in the UK include Tick Tock, Eleven O’Clock, Redbush, Dragonfly and Tetley.
