Watering and feeding your vegetables
Vegetables grown in containers will need to be kept well watered...
Vegetables grown in containers will need to be kept well watered. The compost should be kept moist and, in summer, it may need watering twice a day – test by pushing your finger into the soil. If it feels dry, add some more water.
Vegetables in beds, meanwhile, will also need regular watering, but once a day should be enough. Vegetables will also need feeding to produce a good crop.
For crops grown for their fruit, such as courgettes and aubergines, apply a
high potash plant food (liquid fertiliser) weekly, when their flowers appear. Nitrogen-rich fertilisers will give your leafy crops a real boost.
