Web game feeds hungry
New web game helps users donate rice to the world's hungry.
An online web game is providing people with an opportunity to not only brush up their vocabulary but feed the world's hungry.
Ten grains of rice are donated every time a player gets the correct meaning of a word. The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) is able to buy rice from the revenue generated by companies advertising on the site.
The site 'FreeRice' is the brainchild of American internet fundraiser John Breen. To date, it has raised 1 billion grains of rice; enough to feed over 50,000 people in one day.
Josette Sheeran, Head of the WFP, said: "FreeRice really hits home how the web can be harnessed to raise awareness and funds for he world's number one emergency." She added: "The site is a viral marketing success story."
