According to one department store, a stampede of male shoppers in the cookware department has caused a surge in sales of high-tech kitchen gadgets. Thanks to the boys, even breadmaker sales are up by 45%. So what’s going on?
Are men really flocking to the kitchen? And is there any truth in the idea that men make superior cooks? Evidence would suggest there is – the vast majority of the world’s top chefs are men, after all.
But at home, it’s a very different story. There, men seem to either refuse to cook at all, or demand to be ‘alpha cook’ – producing show-off food in the hope of winning praise, while women knock up weekday meals to fuel the family. But what do you think about the kitchen sex wars? We asked for your views in a reader survey and more than 1,800 of you replied. It’s clearly a subject that provoked your passions and here’s the results.
Are men better cooks?
Gordon Ramsay has said men are better cooks than women, Marco Pierre White the opposite. Who did you think was right?
Overall, your answers came back pretty much equal – it’s when you delve into the different responses of men and women that it gets interesting.
Surprisingly, almost half of women readers think men make better cooks. But three times as many male readers agree with Gordon that men are the true domestic gods.
While only around 20% of respondents say they can usually guess the cook’s gender from what’s on their plate, 25% admit they’d rather a man were in the kitchen when they’re at a good restaurant.

Is cooking sexy? You say a resounding yes to this – but only if you’re a woman, talking about a man. And (prepare to sob into your pinnies, ladies) many men admit to finding the sight of a woman cooking not at all sexy!

Do men cook to show off? Many women suspect that men just cook to show off, creating meals as they would an Airfix model, with a great ‘ta da!’ moment at the end. And, astonishingly, it seems both genders are pretty much agreed that this is the case. At least you’re honest!

Who does the weekday cooking? Yes, even in these enlightened times it seems that women do most of the weekday cooking.

Who does the weekly shop? No surprises here – in the majority of the respondents’ households, women say they do the main food shop. More than half of both male and female respondents thought they were more likely to overspend. Meanwhile, both genders agree that men are more likely to spend on useless kitchen gadgets.

And who does the cleaning up? You guessed it – three quarters of women think men make the biggest mess in the kitchen. But just over half of men agree with them!
