What is I Can Cook!?

From the acceptance of ready meals and junk food in our busy lives, to the virtual disappearance of cookery from school timetables (until recently), the children of Britain now have less opportunity to learn basic cooking skills than ever before…

…That’s why delicious. launched a new Junior Cooks’ series called I Can Cook! – a project that’s very close to our hearts.

“I Can Cook! is a wonderful bunch of recipes that let you and your kids have fun together in the kitchen. Having fun, getting involved and giving them some responsibility is one of the best things you can do with your kids” Jamie Oliver

I Can Cook! is a 12-part series that will equip children with the essential cooking skills for life – and judging from the positive response so far, we’ve tapped into something you’ve all been waiting for.

Each month, I Can Cook! includes four pull-out-and-keep cards covering ingredients, skills and recipes, tailor-made for kids. We’ve asked some of the country’s leading food educators to help us devise the course, including the renowned kids’ cookery writer Amanda Grant and Anita Cormac, director of the Focus on Food Campaign – the UK’s leading food education charity. And thanks to Buxton Natural Mineral Water for sponsoring this series.

“The I Can Cook! series will help teach the skills that are the building blocks to becoming a confident cook” Jacqui Smith, Home Secretary

In part one, I Can Cook! looked at hygiene and cutting techniques, and introduced young readers to the winter squash family.  In part two, the November issue, we’ll be exploring the skills of rubbing in, cooking rice and baking fruit. We’ll also reveal everything you ever wanted to know about mushrooms, and teach you how to make chicken and vegetable kebabs, with a yummy apple and blackberry crumble for pudding.
