Beers for the weekend: to celebrate Oktoberfest
By Izzy Brimeau
There has been a flurry of Oktoberfest photos flooding my social media this week – dirndl, lederhosen and steins popping up from friends celebrating in Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt. They are all iconic snapshots of the German festival however it would be nothing without the beer.
While I wish I was there in person, I’m celebrating in spirit and have found three great German (or German-style) beers you can buy here in Blighty. Here they are, with recipes to match each…
The wheat beer
Erdinger Hefe-Weizen is a Weißbier that is golden in colour with a malty taste and banana and clove flavours. This medium-bodied beer is crisp and refreshing – a perfect match for a one-pan chilli eggs with guacamole brunch. £2.29 a bottle from Beer Hawk.
Augustine Helles has been brewed according to the German Purity law and is a smooth beer with a light hoppy finish. The second fermentation leaves this beer with a crisp maltiness – it’s incredibly easy to drink and pairs nicely with chicken schnitzels with quick fennel and apple sauerkraut. £2.70 per bottle from Beer Merchants.
The sour beer
Hallo Ich Bin Berliner Weisse is a tart beer with light acidity that ties in nicely with it’s apple and lemon flavours. The sour, citrus notes work well with the creamy, meaty flavours from our quick parma ham and goat’s cheese pizzas. £3.10 per bottle from Beer Gonzo.
