Why beans are good for you

  • Fresh beans and peas are packed with nutrients. Not only are they rich in fibre, but they’re also a flavoursome way to boost your intake of vitamin C – good for skin and helping the body to absorb iron from other food. Plus, just 80g (five or six heaped tablespoons) counts as one of your five-a-day.
  • Eating beans and peas adds folate, a B vitamin, to your diet too, which helps to keep the nervous system healthy. Women trying for a baby in the first three months of pregnancy are advised to each more food rich in this nutrient.
  • If you’re watching your weight, broad beans and peas are a good choice as they’re rich in protein – studies show protein keeps you fuller for longer. Peas also help towards iron intake – an 80g serving provides 16 per cent of an adult’s recommended daily allowance.
