What they do:
Sole of Discretion is a community-interest company made up of fishers who shun the idea of industrial fishing. They only use static nets and hand lines from small boats, methods that have much less impact on the sea bed. The initiative was set up by Caroline Bennett, and run from a unit on the quay at Plymouth.
With fish caught, landed and sometimes sold within the same day, Sole of Discretion aims to provide a sustainable market for small-scale, British fishers who respect the environment. They treat everything that is caught with equal reverence and care, so lesser-known species such as wrasse, pouting, ling and dogfish are given the same promotion as the better known types of fish.
An antidote to the mainstream fishing industry, the company supports small-scale fishers who care about the quality of their catch and use ethical fishing methods, and who would otherwise suffer financially because of their small scale.

What the judges said:
Praising their focus and support of small-scale fishers, the judging panel thought Sole of Discretion was a clever initiative that demonstrated real passion for the community.
