What they do:
The brainchild of a former film producer, Plan Bee offers beehive adoption, management and educational services to companies and communities wanting to improve their environmental record. Their aim is to highlight and address the reality of dwindling bee populations across the UK – and since their inception in 2011 they have returned more than 15 million bees to their natural environment. Clients adopt a beehive (or several); Plan Bee installs it, and provides beekeepers to manage the hive and produce their own brand of sustainable honey. They have around 300 beehives and counting, located from Aberdeen to Cornwall, and the honey and other bee products they collect goes toward the production of an extensive range of polishes, beard oils, meads and honeys, such as Founders Reserve: a premium honey sourced from hives located within the postcode handwritten on the side of the jar. Like a good single malt whisky, each batch of honey is unique to the area and season in which it was made.
What the judges said:
The judges were impressed by the concept behind Plan Bee, and its sustainability. The honey itself was deemed excellent, and its ‘postcode origins’, justified the price.
