A kind of cross between a manhattan and a negroni, the boulevardier strides confidently between the two, and has a swagger all of its own.
You can serve it straight but it’s quite potent, so I like to pour it over ice.
30ml bourbon or rye whiskey
30ml Campari
30ml red vermouth
1 orange
Put some ice in a cocktail shaker and add the bourbon, Campari and vermouth. Give it a good stir. Fill a tumbler or similar glass with ice, strain in the drink, then pare a length of orange zest, twist over the drink and add to finish.
Go easy now: you don’t want to tumble into the gutter.
