5 exciting food finds from Northern Ireland to refresh your storecupboard
Storecupboard looking a little empty post party season? Restock and refresh with some exciting products and fine ingredients from Northern Ireland, including artisan pasta and sparkling tea.
1. Whoosh Instant Noodles
Whoosh started as a street food operation in County Derry and has transformed into a range of instant noodle pots with zero artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. A great standby shortcut, they’re easy to jazz up with steamed veg and/or your protein of choice. We loved the Thai Tom Yum noodles’ confident heat and fragrance from lime leaves. £3.75 for 80g, available from Whoosh Instant Noodles
2. Jackson Roze Non-Alcoholic Ginger Wyne
If you’re after a bit of a kick in your glass but without alcohol, Jackson Roze’s fiery extra-strength ginger ‘wyne’, based on a 100-year-old recipe from County Armagh, might hit the spot. Have it straight as a livener, dilute hot or cold for a winter sip, or incorporate into your bakes – try subbing it in for 50ml of the treacle in our ultimate ginger loaf cake. £9 for 750ml, available from Jackson Roze
3. Capparelli pasta
Founded by an Ottolenghi alumnus, artisan Belfast pasta company Capparelli handcrafts its products using ancient grains and flours from Italy, Britain and Ireland. They’re pressed through bronze dies, then dried low and slow, resulting in pleasing bite. The einkorn radiatori (£4.20 for 400g), crafted from stoneground Cotswolds flour and Italian semolina, is gorgeously raffled and nutty. From £3.20 for 500g, available from Capparelli
4. Steeper Culture Craft Fermented Soft Drinks
Inspired by Italian sodas, Belfast-based Steeper Culture has developed a range of sparkling tea infusions that deserve to be in your daily brew rotation. Complex, well rounded, lighter than a kombucha and more savoury than most iced teas, Cherry Lime flavour features fermented green tea and black tea with apple, hibiscus, morello cherry and lime. From £2.50 for 250ml, available from Yumbles and Steeper Culture
5. Linwoods Overnight Oats
It’s little wonder overnight oats are so popular – they’re a great way to get organised and kick off the delicious eats as soon as possible. The new Energy Overnight Oats from Linwoods, based in Country Armagh, are a source of vitamins B6 and B12, fibre and omega 3, thanks to the gluten-free oats, chia seeds and quinoa sprouts. Just add milk and you’re good to go. £4 for 300g, available from Morrisons
