The Penfolds Story
Ever since it was founded in 1844, Penfolds has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Australian winemaking. Now it’s one of the world’s most revered wine brands, favoured by wine critics and collectors across the globe for its outstanding quality and timeless appeal.
Its reputation for pushing boundaries in the pursuit of excellence was established in 1951, when chief winemaker Max Schubert secretly bottled an experimental red — Grange — that went on to become one of Australia’s most iconic wines.
Today, the Penfolds winemaking team continues this spirit of innovation with an exceptional portfolio of wines, perfect forevery occasion.
No ordinary gift
The new gift range is available for a limited time globally and includes striking collectable boxes for some of Penfolds’ most popular wines – including Bin 389, Bin 28 and the Penfolds Max’s range – all designed by Nigo, the renowned Japanese fashion designer and Creative Director at Kenzo Paris.
Inspired by patterns found in traditional Asian textiles, Nigo’s gift box designs feature a two-tone square motif that repeats endlessly, symbolising eternity and prosperity. Nigo’s designs are showcased across a collection of festive gift boxes, with different-coloured boxes denoting the different wines inside.
Here are just three of the excellent quality wines you can choose to enjoy this Christmas…
Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2022

Full-bodied, rich and generous, this shiraz combines lovely mocha, chocolate andespresso flavours. There’s confectionery sweetness with notes of black jellybean, liquorice andchocolate truffles, whileblack forest cake, strudel andcrème anglaise flavours evoke a German cake shop, offset by hints of toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon.
A bold and distinctive black-and-white chequered pattern graces three wines from the Max’s range, named after Penfolds’ Chief Winemaker in the 1950s and the inventor of Penfolds most iconic wine, Grange. Available in Waitrose (Max’s Shiraz), Sainsbury’s (Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon) and Tesco (Max’s Shiraz Cabernet).
Alongside the gift collection, NIGO has designed four collectible Furoshiki wraps that complement the colourways of the giftboxes.
